He grew up in the Waterloo, Iowa, area, then went on to college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a B.S. degree in Humanities (philosophy) and Science (molecular biology). Larry went on to two years of graduate studies in philosophy and psychology at the University of Iowa. He also studied American and European history on the graduate level for many years as a part-time student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Larry spent 24 years of his career in marketing and sales of scientific products for biological research labs. He joined JBS in 1996 as a Field Coordinator, then served as Director of Research from 2001 to 2004, Director of Marketing from 2004 to 2010, and is currently Director of Missions.

Although Larry lived most of his adult life in the Northern Virginia area near Washington, D.C., since 1998 he and his wife Rosalie have resided in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Fun Fact: Larry is known to love Diet Coke, even though he says, “My friends all say it’s going to kill me.”

LNN is Growing!

This week, headquarters got a new employee and Liberty News Network got a producer. Adam Muggethaler has joined JBS and LNN as the producer. He will be working with our field staff to produce video news. He comes to us with ten years experience and a lot of passion that I’m sure he will put to good use for LNN. Headquarters is very excited to have Adam here, and we are all looking forward to how he will expand LNN.
Check out the current news videos from LNN at Liberty News Network’s official site. You can also check out their Facebook page here.

Meet JBS Regional Field Director Michael Smart

Michael joined the John Birch Society in 1995 and was a chapter leader for several years.  Michael was raised in Fresno, California and has been on staff for 14 years in a variety of positions (He’s well traveled!). He was hired as a coordinator in 1998 for Tennessee and Arkansas. Since then he has been a single district coordinator in North Carolina, regional field director for the West Coast & Southern States, and now Regional Field Director for the entire East Coast.  Michael loves working for the Society and couldn’t imagine doing anything else: JBS members are absolutely “the finest body of men and women in the world!”

He’s been married to his wife Carol for 22 years and they have four children.  His job would be virtually impossible without their support.  Michael is a “heavy reader”, his particular interests being theology and history.

Fun Fact: Michael was a competitive road cyclist when he was younger and still rides his bike when he gets a chance.  He’s done a number of century’s (100 mile rides) over the last few years.  His favorite is the “Cap 2 Cap” from Richmond, VA to Williamsburg, VA and back.

Meet JBS Development Officer Marty Ohlson

Development Officer Marty Ohlson learned of the JBS as a result of his parents joining in 1964 during the Goldwater campaign. Shortly after his service in the Marines, Marty started working for the Society in February 1981 as a Coordinator and later as a Major Coordinator in 11 Midwestern states while continuing his education part-time. In 1994 he joined the development staff.

Marty received extensive training in development work. Later, he was asked to take the position of Vice President of Network Development to launch a media production company in Los Angeles. He was also in the commercial investment property business. For several years he was in private business consulting with 501c3 and non-profit organizations.

Today Marty lives near Milwaukee with his wife, Sheila, 8 children and 4 grandchildren. He is involved with a local JBS business and professional chapter.

Fun Fact: He enjoys history and travel.

Meet JBS Accountant Gloria Norton

Gloria has been at JBS since April 8, 2000. She started out doing accounts receivable with one other person. Then just a week after Gloria started, the girl in accounts payable quit and so Gloria took over her position and still helped with doing deposits and mail in accounts receivable. Then the lady in A/R left and Gloria and customer service took over the donations and deposits. She also took on the Payroll Department. Today Gloria does the accounts payable, which, includes the field expense reports, all checks for invoices we receive, etc. She also handles the payroll for JBS and TNA and everything that goes with that.
Gloria has three sons, one daughter, one step-son, twelve grandchildren, and one great grandson. She loves to read, do crafts, put puzzles together and travel. She’s a Packer fan and when she and some of her family get together for Packer games, it gets pretty loud.
Fun Fact: Gloria and one of her sons have a campsite in Shawano where they go four-wheeling in the summer. She’s also in a prayer group at her church.
